Trimming Stems
Before placing your flowers in a vase, trim about 1-2cm from the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption. Use sharp, clean floral shears or a knife to avoid crushing the stem's vascular system.
Water Management
Use a clean vase and fresh, lukewarm water. Change the water completely every 2 days to prevent bacterial growth. Ensure that no leaves are submerged below the water line, as they will rot and shorten the life of your blooms.
Optimal Placement
Keep your arrangement in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and drafts. Avoid placing flowers near ripening fruit, which releases ethylene gas that causes flowers to age prematurely.
Temperature Considerations
Flowers prefer consistent, cool temperatures. If your home is particularly warm, consider moving your arrangement to a cooler room overnight to prolong its freshness. In Canadian winters, ensure they are never left in a cold vehicle or near frosty windows.
